AP Chemistry

• This is an AP Chemistry placement exam for students who:
  • Have completed a physical science course.
  • Will enter grade 10, 11 or 12 in the fall.

The purpose of the exam is to see if a student is prepared to move directly into AP Chemistry without first taking Chemistry X.

Exam details

The exam is:

• Given over two days.
• Has two parts.
• Each part takes 90 minutes.

On both parts, you can use:

• A periodic table.
• A calculator in test mode.

The two parts

• Part one is 65 question multiple choice exam (65 points).
• Part two is the lab portion, which includes:
  • 11 multiple choices questions about things like lab tests, concepts, measurement and analysis (11 points).
  • Completing a lab, with chemicals (19 points).

To qualify for AP Chemistry

• You must score 85 percent or higher on each section of the exam.
• We will tell you what you scored, but you won't be able to see the graded test.
• There are no retakes.

Class registration

If you pass the, exam:

• We will schedule you for AP Chemistry in the next school year.
• Put a T next to Chemistry X on your transcript.
• Monitor you for the first week you are in AP Chemistry.
• If you can't keep up, you will have to move back to Chemistry X.

If you do not pass: 

• We will register you for Chemistry X.

Course credit

• Students who test out of a course move on to the next course.
• You do not earn credit for the course you skip.

To enroll in AP Chemistry, students must earn a score of 85 percent or better on the exam. You are agreeing to this when you register for the exam.
