World Language Courses

World language test-out exams are optional for all high school language students.

• All students can can take an exam to test out of level 1, 2 and 3 language classes.
• Students in grade 10-12 can take an exam to test out of level 4 language classes.

Exam details

• The exam has many parts, including:
  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking
  • Grammar
• It is a timed three-hour exam.
• You must score at least 90 percent to pass.
• There are no retakes.

Class registration

• If you pass, you will be:
  • Scheduled for the next level language class in the next school year.
  • Monitored for the first week you are in the higher level class.
  • If you can't keep up, you will have to drop back a level.
• If you do not pass: 
  • You are registered for the  class you tried to test out of.

Course credit

• If you test out of a course, you move on to the next level of that course.
• You do not earn credit for the course you skip.

Bilingual Seal training

Foreign language students may choose to earn a:

• Minnesota World Language Certificate, or
• Bilingual/Multilingual Seal.

You still have to test out of a world language class in order to advance to a higher level class.
