High School Attendance Rules
We outline the attendance rules for Wayzata High School students.
Table of contents
Tardy policy
- Teachers will mark you tardy if you arrive after the bell without an approved pass.
- If you are more than 10 minutes late, your teacher will mark you absent.
Five or more tardies
- You will be referred to the Dean of Students if you are tardy five times.
- If you are tardy six or more times, you may get a one-day suspension or other disciplinary action.
After suspension
- Students returning from a suspension may be placed on probation.
- Students who do not meet probation expectations may be removed from the class.
Verified absences
These absences are approved in advance. Parents or guardians submit a request before the absence. Teachers are notified.
- Absences verified by a principal
- College visits
- Court-ordered appearances
- Driver's license exam
- Family emergencies or vacations
- Funeral attendance
- Illness or health office visit
- Medical/dental appointments
- Spectators at school competitions, with parent approval
If a chronic health condition may affect your attendance, contact the Health Office. Ask for a Chronic Health Condition Form.
Unverified absences
If we do not receive a reason for the absence, we will mark it as pending (unexcused). A parent or guardian must confirm the absence within two school days after the student returns.
- Any absence in which students and parents/guardians do not comply with attendance rules
- Family vacations that are not pre-arranged
- Missing the bus, oversleeping or skipping school
- Missing class to do homework or study for a test
- Work, unless it is a school-sponsored work program
School-authorized absences
Absences caused by school activities or unexpected or life events.
- Field trips
- Religious holidays
- School-sponsored club, activity or athletic event
- School-sponsored testing, such as AP or PSAT tests
- Suspension
- Verified meeting with school staff
Course credit adjustments for absences
We adjust the amount of your course credit according to this schedule. It includes both verified and unverified absences.
- 10 to 15 absences — 75 percent credit
- 16 to 20 absences — 50 percent credit
- 21+ absences — No credit
How to make up the credit
At the beginning of the following term, we offer credit make-up sessions after school.
- You need to attend two make-up sessions for each course in which you had 10 or more absences.
- Sessions are held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m.
- The timing allows you to take our Activity Bus.
- During each session, you will complete work related to the Portrait of a Wayzata Graduate.
